The medieval Armenian Principality of Khachen, located in present-day Artsakh / Nagorno Karabakh, existed since about 820 AD until the 16th century. Its peak falls in the period of the Hasan-Jalalyan Dynasty, starting in 1214.

The flag of Principality of Khachen dated 1214 (photo) portrays a golden cross in the first third of the length of the apricot field.

The word "Khachen" originates from the word khach, which means "a cross" in Armenian. Accordingly, the flag is canting.
The Royal apricot colour symbolizes the royal family. The cross symbolizes the devotee of the Christian family.

Mamikonian dynasty (4th-8th century)

Elisabeth Bauer (Armenia, 1981) refers to an Armenian flag that was captured by Persian Sassanids during the Battle of Awarair (451), in which Yazdegerd II defeated the Armenian king Vartan Mamikonian. The flag is described as a red-white green tricolour with a cross in the middle field (which is probably the white one).
