The City of San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca (usually known as Catamarca City or Catamarca Capital) is the capital of the province and the head of the Capital Department. The colonization of this area started in the 1600s, and the process for the foundation of the city started in 1678. However the City of San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca was not officially founded until late 1693 or early 1694 by Bartolomé de Castro.

The newspaper "Diario C", from Catamarca (Argentina), reports on 29
November 2005 the official presentation of the new and first municipal
flag of San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca, which took place on 28
November 2005.
The public ceremony took place in the Paseo General Navarro with the
presence of the municipal and provincial authorities and other
organisms. The flag was presented by Mayor [Intendente Municipal] Dr.
Ricardo Guzmán and blessed by Vicar-General His Grace Moisés Pachado.
The flag contest was initiated by the municipal administration and the
association of the Damas Belgranianas [Belgrano's Ladies] presided by
Mrs. Gladys Pandolfi de Moreno. All citizens of Catamarca could present
a proposal and several did it. The jury awarded the first prize to
designer Fabián Martinena and the second prize to Eduardo Aroca; other
participants were awarded a special mention.
The new municipal flag recalls the local traditions. In the center of
the flag a typical Catamarca poncho is shown, as symbol of the ocher land,
flanked by two green stripes (guardas) symbolizing the vivid essence of
its sap.
The flag is bordered by two dark red stripes that recall the mestiza blood, with in the center a figure made of eight rectangles, recalling the designs usually seen in local ponchos. This is the genuine symbol of the sacred spirit of the mountains, represented by the dark brown colour. In the center a cross appears. It recalls the Cross of America (Cruz de América), symbolizing the Indian and Hispanic sides that gave its identity to our culture, according to the interpretation made by Adán Quiroga.

The mentioned [central] emblem seems to be a (stylization of) the Inca symbol chakana.

This is the second flag design in Argentina based on a regional poncho. The first one was the provincial flag of Salta.

Fray Mamerto Esquiú is a department of Catamarca Province in Argentina. This provincial subdivision has a population of about 11,000 inhabitants in an area of 280 sqkm, and its capital city is San José. The department is named after the patriot and servant of God, friar Mamerto Esquiú (1826-1883)
Tomorrow, July 9 (2008), the department Fray Mamerto Esquiú addition to revive a new declaration of National Independence, a historic event live, as will the delivery of the departmental flag to all educational establishments, institutions and other organizations located in the department He's in the Constitution.
The meaning of the flag is the following:
At the center of teaching combines the present and past. The silhouette of the
famous friar who gives name to our department surrounded by the outline of a
dome of the many churches relics representing the past.
The cactus sentinel proud of the hills that guard the present.
All of these Sayala settled on the (brown) as significant for the inhabitants of
this land, bordered by an Indian guard representing the first inhabitants of
this place.
All this resting on the white and blue of our national ensign, meaning also the
celestial lower left corner of the Pirquitas dike and the river valley that
surca our department. The sky's upper right corner represents our limpid sky
reminds us that the mantle of our brunette mother.
The flag design was done by Manuel Angel Acevedo and selected through a
competition between June 11 and July 13, 2007.
The establishment was approved by the Deliberating Council in Fray Mamerto Esquiú.

According to "Diario C", 1 March 2010, the public contest for the flag of the Department of Santa María has been officially launched by the municipal administration.
Deadline for proposal submission is 30 April 2010.

"Diario C" reports on 10 May 2010 that the jury has selected on 3 May three proposals from the 355 submissions. The inhabitants of Santa María can vote for their preferred design up to 12 May 2010; the jury may then propose some modifications to the selected design.
The flag will be presented to the public on 12 June 2010.
The three proposals are shown on the bottom of the article.

The flag of Santa María is prescribed by Municipal Decree No.5 approved during the ordinary session No. 22 of the Municipal Council (2010).
The flag was selected in a public contest organized in May 2010 that yielded 355 proposals, out of which 3 contenders were submitted to popular vote.
The designer of the winning proposal, Diego David Barrionuevo, explained that the flag shall have proportions derived from the Golden Number, that is 1:1.83. It is based on the Andine Cross, alluding to the mystical meaning of number 4 ("tawa"), based on the
proportionality of the two arms of the Southern Cross and the special partition in four components of the Andine cosmogony. In the middle, where the Square Cross is inscribed, is placed a double circle, the symbol of universal knowledge, charged in the middle with an urn of the Santamaría culture, representing the climax of development of this culture.
The colors are the "three sacred colours of Santa María arts. Terracotta red is a symbol of the day, fire, light, heath and of the
Upper World; gray black is a symbol of knowledge and of the Lower World; white is a symbol of cosmic and atemporal energy. The fourth colour, ochre yellow is a symbol of the soil, its energy and its dynamics.

The Departamento of Valle Viejo celebrated its 307th anniversary.
During the ceremony, the flag of Valle Viejo was officially unveiled.
The first Native Forum in Argentina took place in Valle Viejo. It was
decided that the foundation day of Valle Viejo would be the 19th April,
since this is the Indio-Americans' Day.
This information was reported by "DiarioC", published in Catamarca, on
19 April 2005. There was unfortunately no more detail on the flag.
