Title: Flags and Signals of All Nations
Medium: book
Main author(s): George C. Hounsell
Edition (publisher: place): Field & Tuer: (unknown location) (United Kingdom)
Language: English
Edition date: 1873 (1st ed.)
Format: 18×12 ″

Remarks: ABF 01.

In 1871 Hounsell Brothers proposed to prepare for publication a Book of the Design of the Flags of All Nations, and arranged that the Admiralty would verify its accuracy and purchase some copies. Three editions of a 18 inches × 12 inches wide (45 cm × 30 cm) flag book appeared: [hou73], [hou74] and [hou75] Produced for the Admiralty Stores Branch by Hounsell Brothers.
David Prothero, 30 Apr 2003 and 11 Dec 2006

The 1873 edition was produced for the Admiralty Stores Branch by Hounsell, and simply published by Field and Tuer. This seems to indicate there was some official involvement. At this time, HMSO was primarily the supplier of government stationery and little else, so it was not the natural publisher for an official publication. This series of books looks like one of their first major ventures.

Title: Drawings of the Flags in Use at the Present Time by Various Nations

Same size and mainly same content as Hounsell’s book [hou73]. Included three additional pages for colonial badges, with the circles where the badges should have been printed, captioned but left blank, because the design of the badges had not been settled in time; they were later published as [hms81].

Title: Flags of the Fifty States and Their Incredible Histories
Medium: book
Main author(s): Randy Howe
Secondary author(s): Edward B. Kaye (gath.); Mario Fabretto (ill.)
Edition (publisher: place): The Globe Pequot Press: Guilford (CT) (United States)
Language: English
Edition date: 2002

Format: 7,8×7,7(×0,8) ″
  • How new is Randy’s book? So new that it includes information gathered by Ted Kaye during his worldwide flag survey of American states.
  • How good are the illustrations in Randy’s new book? So good that you’ll want to buy at least two copies: Their author is Mario Fabretto, arguably the world’s premier master of flag computer graphics. Plus, Mario’s work is based in good measure on the archives of Dr. Whitney Smith at the The Flag Research Center. Does it get any better? I don’t think so.
  • How useful is Randy’s book? You’ll have to decide that by yourself…

OK, I can’t resist: Finally, finally a teacher/writer/NAVAnik has written about State flags to address every elementary, middle, and high-school in the country!

Finally we have a book that speaks to kids and grown-ups alike — but forget the grown-ups, for some 40 years now, we’ve needed a teacher to speak to kids about flags. To speak to them as only a teacher can.

It finally happened: We can take our passion for flags to the next generation, and the one after that.

Peter Orenski, 13 Nov 2002
