Adopted 1991
The municipal flag, designed by José Guilherme Pagiola and depicted at the
municipal website, uses the colors of the Italian flag to commemorate the
Italian immigrants who colonized the city. The tree in the shield is the Pau Grande ("big stick" or
"giant timber") which was the city's first name and also the meaning of its current name in Tupi-
Guarani. The name came from a gigantic tree that had been
felled across the mouth of the Rio Triunfo to serve as a bridge. The flag was officially recognized in 1991,
the centennial of the municipality. The coat of arms was designed by a student, Thaiz Queiroz
Sabagth, as part of a competition, and adopted by order 2002 of 10 December
1990.
