The municipality of Guarantã do Norte (32,143 inhabitants in 2009; 4,763 sq. km) is located in the north of Mato Grosso, on the border with the State of Pará, 725 km of Cuiabá.

Guarantã do Norte, founded in 1982 as a District of the Municipality of Colíder, was made an independent municipality in 1986. The foundation was part of the development plan of northern Mato Grosso started in 1979 and involving 245,000 ha located in Colíder; the project was managed by the Mato Grosso Regional Superintendence on behalf of INCRA (Instituto Nacional de Colonização e Reforma Agrária - National Institute of Colonization and Land Reform). The first colonists (c. 1,200) were members of COTREL (Cooperativa Tritícola de Erechim - Erechim Wheat Cooperative) expelled from Mato  Grosso do Sul after the building of hydroelectric barrage or living in too small estates.

The municipal website shows a mirrored image of the flag. The description of the flag does not state the respective location of the elements of the flag: "The flag of Guarantã do Norte is prescribed by Law No. 007 of 12 March 1990. Its design includes the following elements: a star, a road with rectangles and a Guarantã trunk.
Colors:
- A white star symbolizing peace, to be established and maintained;
- Blue, recalling the tropical sky and the rivers watering the municipality;
- A yellow road highlighting the main mining resources, especially gold. The white rectangles are progressing steps towards harmony and peace;
- Green stands for the dense forests of the municipality;
- A brown Guarantã trunk."
