The municipality of Fazenda Rio Grande (81,687 inhabitants in 2010; 117 sq. km)
is located in the Curitiba Metropolitan Region, 35 km of Curitiba. Fazenda Rio
Grande emerged around the two estates ("fazenda") of Capocu and Rio Grande /
Grande Rio, established on the bank of river Iguaçu in the 16th century
and 1800, respectively. The settlements that developed around the two estates
and other neighbouring settlements formed the municipality of
Mandirituba, established on 25 July 1960 by secession from the municipality
of São José dos Pinhais. The district of Fazenda Rio Grande was established
in Mandirituba by State Law No. 7,521 of 17 November 1981. This was prompted
by the increase of the population in Greater Curitiba following the abandon
of coffee cultivation in northern Paraná. The municipality of Fazenda Rio
Grande was established by State Law No. 9,213 of 26 January 1990, following
Bill No. 229 tabled on 15 September 1989 by the State Representative Aníbal
Khury. The municipality was inaugurated on 12 April 1991.
The flag of
Fazenda Rio Grande is of 14 units on 20 units in size. The flag is blue with
a white stripe of 7 units in height, forming a wavy diagonal from the upper
left corner to the lower right corner. The municipal coat of arms is placed
in the middle of the flag, centered, of 3 units on 3 units in size. Blue
represents justice and loyalty while the white stripe represents the fluidity
of a flowing river, symbolizing the dynamics of the town.
The coat of
arms depicts river Iguaçu, which has its source in the municipality,
represented azure for justice, charity and loyalty, flowing between banks
vert. The upper part of the shield is white with the Southern Cross or,
symbolizing the union and force of the inhabitants. Three gear wheels argent
symbolize peace, friendship and work; they symbolize industrial manpower, as
a small force able to move a bigger one, which in turn moves an even bigger
one. The shield is surmounted by an eight-towered mural crown argent, the
symbol of a town of 2nd rank, seat of a county ("comarca"). The shield is
surrounded by stylized araucarias vert emblematic of Paraná and forming the
gate of an estate ("fazenda") symbolically protecting the municipality.
The yellow scroll beneath the shield represents light and knowledge, with the
date of establishment of the municipality, "26.01" (left) "1990" (right),
surrounding the name of the municipality, all sable.
