The municipality of Quatro Pontes (3,646 inhabitants; 114 sq. km) is located
in western Paraná, 480 km of Curitiba. According to its Human Development
Index (0.851), Quatro Pontes is the second most developed town in Paraná
after Curitiba. On 20 September 2010, a grandstand collapsed during a car
race organized in Quatro Pontes, injuring more than 100 spectators. Quatro
Pontes was established in the 1950s by the Toledo-based "Industrial
Madeireira Colonizadora Rio Paraná - S/A Maripá", which promoted colonization
to exploit the timber resources. In 1945, the company purchased property
rights from the English "Madera del Alto Paraná" company and established
colonists from Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, mostly of German (90% of
the today's inhabitants are of German origin) and Italian origin. Quatro
Pontes was established by Municipal Law No. 31 of 31 July 1962 as one of the
nine districts of the newly formed municipality of Marechal Cândido Rondon.
In the 1970s, agriculture was mechanized and soybean, associated with maize
and wheat, superseded coffee as the local main crop; no longer suitable, the
25-ha plots originally allocated to the first settlers were grouped in bigger
estates, causing the exile of the smallholders to Paraguay, Mato Grosso and
Rondônia. The municipality of Quatro Pontes was established by State Law No.
9,368 of 13 September 1990, after a plebiscite held on 24 March 1990, and
inaugurated on 1 January 1993.
The flag of Quatro Pontes was designed by
Mrs Clarice Ana De Souza, the winner of a public contest. The flag is with
proportions 14:20, tierced per bend, from top to bottom, blue, white and red.
The blue triangle [deemed isosceles, which it is not] represents the infinite
sky covering the municipality and the serenity of its inhabitants. The red
triangle [deemed isosceles, which it is not, either] represents the pioneers'
courage, struggle and work. The white diagonal stripe represents work, peace
unity and religious feeling. In the middle of the flag is placed a disk
depicting a rural landscape, the tractor, representing agriculture. In the
central right part of the disk is placed an escutcheon, "Quarterly, 1. Or two
stars argent per bend sinister, 2. Gules a chimney argent, 3. Gules a branch
vert; 4. Argent an open book or". The stars are of (slightly) different size,
the biggest (dexter) representing Paraná and the smallest (sinister)
representing the municipality. The chimney represents the existing and future
industries. The branches represent the main crops in the municipality. The
book represents education, culture and religious faith. Green symbolizes the
local forests and fields. Yellow symbolizes richness. Red symbolizes he
pioneers' courage, struggle and work [as on the flag], and patriotic love, as
well.
