The municipality of Bossoroca (6,887 inhabitants in 2010; 1,587 sq. km) is
located in northwestern Rio Grande do Sul, 520 km of Porto Alegre. The
municipality is named for gullies, usually known as "voçorocas" or "boçorocas",
a word of Tupi origin. Such gullies, caused by water erosion of sandy soils, are
common in the municipality, especially near the parish church.
The
shield is divided into three parts. The upper part is vert with a gully proper.
The lower part is or, charged with a bovine head and a tractor, all proper,
respectively. Below the shield is placed a scroll vert with the black writing "Bossoroca"
and "12/10/1965", The shield is flanked with a branch of soybean leaved vert and
fructed or and a wheat spike or. The shield is surmounted with a four-towered
mural crown or.
Vert represents the soil and the fields of the municipality,
as well as its inhabitants' aspiration to peace and love. The gully shown on the
background vert recalls the namesake of the municipality. Or represents the
fertility of the soil and the work force. The bovine head and the tractor
represent cattle-breeding and agriculture, respectively, the two main sources of
income in the municipality. The soybean and wheat plants represent the two main
crops in the municipality. The four-towered crown is the heraldic representation
of the seat of a division of the royal administration.
