The municipality of Forquetinha (2,473 inhabitants in 2010; 94 sq. km) is located in eastern central Rio Grande do Sul, 140 km of Porto Alegre. Forquetinha is mostly populated (98%) with descendants of German immigrants, most of them coming from the Hunsrück region. The first evangelist church was erected in 1890. The Hunsrück district is still spoken in the municipality. The municipality of Forquetinha was established on 16 April 1996 and inaugurated on 1 January 2001.
The symbols of Forquetinha are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 47 of 15 June 2001.
The flag should be of the same dimensions as the national flag. Green, yellow and blue are the colors of the Brazilian flag; green, yellow and red are the colors of the Rio Grande do Sul flag; black (in the coat of arms), red and yellow are the colors of the German flag. These colors are a tribute to the homeland (Brazil), the State (Rio Grande do Sul) and the country of the ancestors (Germany). Red symbolizes courage, persistence, work and faith. Yellow symbolizes richness, gold and development. Green symbolizes hope, willingness and the natural environment. Blue symbolizes serenity, the sky and the water of the rivers whose limpidity has to be preserved.
The coat of arms is divided in three parties symbolizing the past, the
present and the future of the municipality.
The past is symbolized in the the upper left quarter. The early
colonization of the municipality is represented by a family (father,
mother and offspring), work (cropping and cropping tools) and harvest
(basket full of agricultural products). This represents the main
values of the people who immigrated in the country, boosted by the
aspiration to a better future.
The present is symbolized in the upper right quarter. The culture and
the religious faith are represented by a typical post-and-beam house.
The church represents the religious faith of the community. In the
background, the landscape represents the preserved natural environment.
The future is symbolized in the lower quarter. The landscape is
divided by river Forquetinha, whose crystalline waters recall rivers
Rhine, Moselle and Nahe that waters the region of origin of the early
colonists. On the banks of the river are depicted beautiful, green
landscapes that represent main resources for the municipality.
The symbols of commerce and industry are shown on the left and right
part of the shield, respectively.
The shield is surmounted by a golden mural crown representing
richness, moral values and power. The legislative, executive and
judiciary powers are represented by the three gates of the tower.
