Colwood is in the "West Shore", or "Western Communities" suburbs of Victoria, BC, on Southern Vancouver Island, along with Langford, Metchosin, View Royal, and Highlands.
The building in the seal is Hatley Castle, the centrepiece of Royal Roads University (now a public, business-oriented university, until 1995 the site of Royal Roads Military College). The Castle itself was originally the home of BC premier (and later Lt.-Gov.) James Dunsmuir.
City Hall's webpage says the area has a history going back to the 18th
century, this may refer to the first meetings of European explorers with the
local natives. The city grew up around one of the Hudson's
Bay Company farms which supplied Fort Victoria from the 1850s, but was not
incorporated as a city until 1985. Mail to Colwood is still addressed to
"Victoria, BC" like most of the Southern Island.
