In "Vernon News", 9 November 2010, Rachel Kimola presents the Vernon flag
that was flown in Camp Nathan Smith (Afghanistan) of the Canadian Armed Forces,
as part of the Home Flags Project. The flag was brought back to Vernon by
Leading Seaman Gareth Eley.
"[...]
Eley says he isn't sure what will
become of the flag once he hands it over to Vernon mayor Wayne Lippert during
the Remembrance Day ceremonies on November 11. “I heard the Victoria flag was
raised and flown in front of their City Hall within about ten minutes of being
handed over, I hope that is what will happen to my flag.”
[...]"
The flag,
shown on a color photo, is white with the city crest in the middle.

The city crest is presented on the municipal website as follows:
"Vernon
was incorporated in December 1892 and the Crest was adopted at that time and
later incorporated into a Chain of Office. The "V" of the shield represents the
name of our City. The elk represents the wildlife of the area (elk, which were
plentiful at the time Vernon was incorporated, are not too prevalent now). The
sheaves represent the importance of agriculture. The horn of plenty represents
the fruit industry. The lower part comprising the wavy blue lines on the white
background depicts the many lakes in the area and the sunburst is indicative of
the splendid climate enjoyed in the sunny Okanagan Valley."
