District was officially renamed in its Letters Patent to the District of West
Kelowna. The District has a population of 28,793 and covers a land area of

The District was renamed after a
referendum in Nov. 2008. According to:
http://www.civicinfo.bc.ca/election2008/reports/referendum.asp, the
questions were:
QUESTION I -
The official name of our municipality is
"WESTSIDE DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY". Do you wish to change it?
Yes/ No
QUESTION II-
If the name of the municipality is to be changed, which name do
you prefer? Vote for ONE (1).
District of Okanagan Hills / District of
Westbank / District of West Kelowna / District of Westlake.
The results
were, YES to the name change, and "West Kelowna" narrowly chosen over "Westbank".
Based on residents' suggestions, the naming committee suggested these names
also be included: Okanagan Hills, Westlake, Four Seasons, Lake Okanagan,
Ponderosa.
The new name has already made for confusion when wild fires
threatened homes in West Kelowna, and tourists weren't sure if Kelowna was safe.
