Organization born from the Communist Party
to fight against the dictatorship of Pinochet by violent means, today in
day this one divided in 2 groups, one part of the
Juntos Podemos and other one that continues
in the terrorist route. They took the Manuel Rodríguez name,
for the guerrilla hero of the war of Chilean
independence.
Uriel González Inostroza, 16 Jul 2006
In 1983, the Chilean Communist Party created
Manuel Rodríguez Patriotic Front, an armed wing to carry out terrorist
attacks with the express goal of overthrowing the Chilean dictator Augusto
Pinochet. At its height, the FPMR was estimated to have between 500 and 1000
members. After the fall of Pinochet’s regime and a return to democracy
in 1989 the Chilean Communist Party, debated the
legitimacy of sponsoring a terrorist organization in a post-Pinochet Chile.
Out of the debate emerged two factions of the FPMR, the FPMR Party and the
FPMR-Dissidents. The FPMR Party put down its arms, but the FPMR-D continued
to engage in terrorism as protest of the lack of prosecution against members
of the Pinochet administration and to discredit the Chilean Armed Forces.
Following multiple arrests of FPMR-D’s leaders in the 1990s, the group
is no longer an active terrorist threat.
