In 1970 the city of Brunsbüttelkoog merged with the municipalities of Brunsbüttel and Westerbüttel and the municipalities of Brunsbüttel Parish: Mühlenstraßen, Osterbelmhusen, Ostermoor und Westerbelmhusen. The new city of Brunsbüttel overtook flag and arms of the preceding entity of Brunsbüttelkoog. The anchor is symbolizing shipping and industries. The spade is symbolizing dyking and agriculture in the former parish. A bend sinister wavy from the arms, symbolizing the Kiel Canal, is omitted in the flag.
