Due to a prophecy the tree should bloom as long as the Dithmarsians could keep their freedom, Thus it was also a freedom tree. When Dithmarschen was subdued in 1559 the tree withered. Due to a legend Dithmarschen would regain its freedom, when a magpie, having five nestlings, would breed in the treetop and the tree would bloom again. But as the tree had disappeared, that never happened. The municipality had planted a seedling and and the coat of arms is a symbol of the accomplishment of the second prophecy.
