Description of coat of arms:
In a golden (= yellow) shield is a blue, rampant lion armed and tongued red.
Meaning:
In 1353 city rights had been granted to the village by the dukes Otto and Wilhelm of Lüneburg. The usual denotation was however always market town (Flecken). The oldest seals from the 14th century display the lion beneath a Gothic vault. Since the 15th century he stands in a shield. The lion was depicted as sinister facing on seals from 1564 and 1630. Hupp recommended this version in order to distinguish from the identical arms of the cities of Bleckede and Fallersleben. Since the 18th century however the dexter facing version prevailed again.
