Description

According to Günther 1998a, the proportions of the stripes are 3:3:10:48:10:3:3, the format is 4:7, and the griffin should occupy 3/8 of the flag height. These sizes are not fixed in the specifications, they are just those which are currently used. Sources: Staack 1997 and Günther 1998a.

Stefan Schwoon, 13 February 2001

Officially, the red griffin stands on a green tree-stump, according to the city law (Hauptsatzung) of 6 October 1994.

Jens Pattke, 4 December 2001

The Hauptsatzung is available online here.

Stefan Schwoon, 13 February 2001

Günther 2001 shows this illustration with the Greifswald flags until 1990/94 (ill. 55), since 1994 (ill. 56), the variant in accordance with city law (ill. 57) and the Schiffsflagge (ship flag, ill. 58). No official details on Greifswald city flag exist for the time period 1990 to 1994.

This unofficial flag has been used since 1994.

Jens Pattke, 4 December 2001

Jens, do you know if the above illustration (which is based on Staack 1997 and Günther 1998a) is a former flag that was changed by the 1994 Hauptsatzung? If not, it is probably safer to assume the possibility of an error and remove it. Also, do you know when the arms changed from the previous form (as on the ICA website to their present?
