Introduction

According to Mr. Gerhard Stiwich and Mrs. Regina Stemmer the comprehensive muncipality has neither flag nor coat of arms but it is sharing the symbols of the market town (German: Flecken)
Very special thanks to Mr. Gerhard Stiwich, who showed me the banner of Bardowick market town on 5 August 2010.

Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a red field is a silver(=white) castle having three towers, the central tower slightly higher, with green roofs ending in a dome. In front of the gate is a red shield showing three silver(=white) carrots with green leaves. The castle is a remembrance to former importance, having had city rights until 1189. The carrots are symbolizing the cultivation of vegetables in the area in 19th century.
According to Mrs. Ursula Schwanitz-Roth from municipal archive the image is based on a seal from 16th century (confirmed by Stadler). The arms had been approved after long struggles by the authorities of Lower Saxony in 1950. The colours being unknown had been chosen arbitrarily.
The approved arms showed however green triangular roofs. But this version never came in use. The current arms are based on a draft from 1950, made by the local artist Hugo Friedrich Hartmann, showing silver(=white) roofs ending in a dome, the castle was masoned black and the inescutcheon with the carrots was superimposing an open(=black) gate. These arms are also upon nowadays flag.
Meaning: According to Stadler 1972, p.21 the castle is a remembrance to former importance of the town, having had city rights until 1189. The carrots are symbolizing the cultivation of vegetables in the area in 19th century.
Note: A plain red over white horizontal bicolour, mentioned in Hauptsatzung of Bardowick, last updated 11 December 2003, is not in use.

Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided by a bottoms up pall. All parts of shield are of white and blue colour. In the base is a single rush, in the dexter chief is a x-shaped piece of wood, in the sinister chief is a crozier.
I spotted the coat of arms on 18 April 2007 in Barum near the firebrigade-station. The image of flag matches the description given in http://kommunalflaggen.de/. The flag was submitted at Hauptstaatsarchiv Hannover.

Municipality of Handorf

[Handorf municipality] 3:5 image by Klaus-Michael Schneider, 6 Jun 2007

Description of flag:
The ratio is 3:5.It is a yellow over red horizontal bicolour with the coat of arms in the centre of the flag.

Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided per fess. The dividing line is superimposed by a green hexagon with two opposite very long sides and four very small ones. The base shows a lily of the valley in natural colour (green with white blossoms) on a golden (=yellow) field. In the chief there are a church in the dexter chief and a windmill in the sinister chief.
All objects are silver (=white) except the green roof of the churches clock tower. The chief's background is red.
Both objects are probably the two main attractions of the fairly small heather village.
I spotted this flag on 18 April in Handorf at the windmill-restaurant.

Description of flag:
The ratio is 3:5. It is a white over green horizontal bicolour. Although in Hauptsatzung only a plain bicolour is mentioned, according to the mayor Heinz Fricke the municipality is using a flag with coat of arms in its centre.
Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided per pale. The dexter side shows a green, knobby oak with eight golden(=yellow) acornsin a silver(=white) field. The sinister side shows three silver(=white) larks ordered vertically in a green field.
Meaning: According to this webpage the oak and the green colour are symbolizing the numerous oak trees, some of which are existing still today in the village. The larks are canting.
