Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided per bend sinister. Above in a red field is a swallow in natural colour (=black and white) upon a golden(=yellow) 8-point star. Below is a golden(=yellow) royal crown in a blue field. Both fields are separarted by a silver(=white) wavy line.
Meaning:
According to source swallow with star is symbolizing the former rulers, the counts of Schwalenberg. The arms are canting, because "Schwalenberg" means "mountain of the swallows". The crown reminds at a court yard of Franconian rulers in the early middle ages. The wavy line is symbolizing Emmer creek.

Flag, banner and coat of arms were approved by Regierungspräsident Detmold on 14 April 1972.
Description of flag:
According to Veddeler 2003, p.212 the former city used a black over red over yellow horizontal tricolour, which would be the same like the flag of Germany. www.koenigsbanner.de shows an image of the city flag with the coat of arms shifted to the hoist. The colours are taken from the coat of arms of former city, which had been granted in 1906.
