Buchen (Odenwald) Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a silver shield stands a green beech tree upon a triple mount of the same colour. The tree is flanked by two green branches issuant. The red, bendy inescutcheon, displaying a silver (= white) wheel with six spokes, is fixed upon the stem.
Meaning:
The Barons of Dürn, the owners of the village, granted city rights in 1216(?), certainly before 1250. Between 1296 and 1309 the Archbishopric and Electorate of Mainz gained the total control over the city. This is symbolized by the inescutcheon. The city remained a dominion of the archbishops until 1802. The beech tree is a canting element. The pattern appeared first on seals after 1309, proofs exist from 1350 and 1386. The pattern was fixed in 1964.
