Description of coat of arms:
In a silver(=white) shield is a black cross all over the shield made of eight trapeziums and a red crescent moon in the canton with its horns pointing to the dexter side. The title of a city was granted in 1222. This pattern of coat of arms was used since 1910. It was granted to keep this pattern in 1970 by the Regierungspräsident (=district governor) of Arnsberg, after Attendorn had merged with some other municipalities in 1969.
Meaning:
According to source the cross symbolizes that Attendorn was part of the archbishopric and electorate of Köln. The moon is said to be an attribute of St.John the Baptist, who was the city's patron saint.
