Coat of arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a silver (=white) shield is a red castle, consisting of a surrounding wall masoned black, and three towers. They are topped by blue cone shaped roofs crowned with golden balls. The central tower is bigger. Above the castle a two lying shields. Upon the dexter chief point a silver (=white) shield with a black bordure showing a black cross patty fitchy. Upon the sinister chief point is a golden (=yellow) shield having a chief six times divided per bend into red and silver (=white).
Meaning:
According to source Rotenburg regained city rights in 1929. The arms are based on a seal from 1427, which was made after the city rights had been extended (German: Weichbildrechte) in 1403 by Johann III of Asel, bishop of Verden. The red castle (German: Rote Burg)is canting. The shield with cross belongs to the bishops of Verden, the other shield belongs to the Asel family, who was member of the local gentry of Hildesheim.
