Description of flag:
The ratio is 3:5. It is a red over white horizontal bicolour with the coat of arms in the centre of the flag.
Description of coat of arms:
In a silver(=white) field is a red embattled wall, masoned black. It is topped by a tower with a triangular roof, which is flanked by two embattled torrets. At both ends a banner, showing the arms of the counts of Mark is stuck diagonally at the walls of the central towers.
Meaning:
According to Veddeler 2003, p.229 the arms are based upon the city's main seal from 1290. The checkered bar is alluding to the counts of Mark, the former rulers.

The coat of arms was approved by minister of interior of Northrhine-Westphalia on 13 November 1967. The city used the colours white and blue, but they had been changed into red and white in 1950 during the celebration of an anniversary. Probably they never had been approved. According to §2(2) of Hauptsatzung of the city of Unna, dated 7 October 1999, the flag is red over white, but it is allowed to place the arms into its centre.

Borough of Hemmerde

[Hemmerde borough flag (Unna)] 3:5 image by Klaus-Michael Schneider, 16 Jun 2010

Description of flag:
The ratio is 3:5. It is a white over red over white horizontal triband with the coat of arms in the centre of the red stripe.
Description of coat of arms:
In a silver(=white) field are three red objects ordered two above one.
Meaning: According to Wikipedia in 1962 a coat of arms was approved based on a seal Johann von Drenhusen from 1383. But I have no idea, what the objects are. It may be houses, if Drenhusen means "three houses" (German: Dreihausen). But that is a mere speculation.

The unknown objects in the Hemmerde arms may be hats or rudimentary helmets, compare: Hemmerde, noble family
