The flag's ratio is 3:5. The banners ratio is 5:2. Both have the same pattern as the coat of arms.
Description of coat of arms:
It is a quarterly divided shield in silver (=white/ 1st and 4th quarter) and gold (=yellow/ 2nd and 3rd quarter). According to basic rules of heraldry the quarters are separated by a black centred cross which is superimposed by a red fleur-de-lis.

Meaning:
The municipality was built in 1970, when the municipalities of Grefrath and Oedt merged. Gold and silver have been taken from the coat of arms of Oedt, the red fleur-de-lis was the ensign of the lords of Greveroide and the black cross was a symbol, that the municipality once belonged to the archbishopric and electorate of Köln.

Editorial note:
§2(3) of Hauptsatzung of the municipality of Grefrath, version 16 June 2008 only mentions a banner. Stadler 1972,p.45 also claims the existence of a flag.
