Description of current flag:
The ratio is 3:5. It is a blue - yellow - blue vertical triband with ratio 1:2:1. The coat of arms is in the middle of the central stripe.

Coat of arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a blue shield is a black bull's head armed silver (= white), crested by a golden (= yellow), sinister facing demi-griffin issuant, tongued red.
Meaning:
Both griffin and bull' head, had been emblems of the Lords of Rostock, the former rulers, which here have been combined.

The Flag was approved by minister of interior of Mecklenburg-Westpomerania on 15 August 2000, published in the roll of arms of Mecklenburg-Westpomerania as no. 0213. The coat of arms had been granted by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II on 10 April 1858.
