Symbols of Íllar

The flag and arms of Íllar, adopted on 9 July 1997 by the Municipal Council and revised on 28 January 1998, as suggested on 30 October 1997 by the Royal Academy of Cordóba (replacement of the river argent and azure by a pallet wavy argent), are prescribed by Decree No. 123, adopted on 9 June 1998 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 4 July 1998 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 74, pp. 8,349-8,350 (text). This was confirmed by a Decree adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).

The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular panel, one time and a half longer (from hoist to fly) than high, vertically divided into two equal parts, at hoist, yellow, at fly, blue. In the middle of the yellow part is placed the crowned municipal coat of arms, in width (from dexter to sinister borders) 1/6 of the flag's width, the elements of the coat of arms in respective proportions.
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1. Azure a pallet wavy argent cantonned by two poplars eradicated of the same, 2. Arms of Cárdenas, branch of the Dukes of Maqueda. The shield surmounted by a Royal Spanish crown closed.

The waves and the trees represent river Andarax and the trees that grow on its banks.
The Cárdenas were lords of the village, Dukes of Maqueda and Governors General of the Kingdom of Granada. The lower quarter of the shield shows the arms of Cárdenas (Or two wolves statant sable per pale) with the arms of the Dukes of Maqueda as the bordure.
