Presentation of Riofrío

The municipality of Riofrío (252 inhabitants in 2010; 6,500 ha) is located in the center of Ávila Province, 20 km of Ávila.

Riofrío and its scenic landscapes have been popularized by the writer Azorín (José Augusto Trinidad Martínez Ruiz, 1873-1967; biography); in his historical novel Un pueblecito: Riofrío de Ávila (1916), dedicated to Antonio Machado, Azorín portrays Jacinto Bejarano Galavis, a sensual priest who left the Madrid Court to serve as the Riofrío parish priest and published in 1791 his Sentimientos patrióticos (Patriotic feelings). In his essay Azorín: Primores de lo vulgar (1917), José Ortega y Gasset highlighted the affinity between Azorín and Bejarano.
