Presentation of Redecilla del Camino

The municipality of Redecilla del Camino (133 inhabitants in 2009; 1,210 ha; municipal website) is located in the east of the Province of Burgos, on the border with La Rioja, 70 km of Burgos.

Redecilla del Camino is the first village in Castilla y León on the Way of St. James (El Camino). The village was mentioned for the first time in the San Millán de la Cogolla abbey charter, dated 1025, which lists the strata (paved way) linking Redecilla and the San Martín monastery, itself granted to the San Millán abbey in 945 by Count of Castile Fernán Gonz&aaute;lez. In the oldest known pilgrim's dairy of the Way of St. James, Codex Calixtinus, written in the 13th century, the French clerk Aymeric Picaud relates its journey between Nájera and Redecilla.
