The municipality of Villanueva de Gumiel (292 inhabitants in 2010; 2,233 ha) is located 80 km of Burgos.
Ivan Sache, 29 March 2011
The flag of Villanueva de Gumiel is prescribed by a Decree adopted on 10 February 2000 by the Burgos Provincial Government, signed on 21 February 2000 by the President of the Government, and published on 3 March 2000 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 44, p. 2,478 (text).
The flag is described as follows:
Flag: Quadrangular flag, with proportions 1:1, with a green (right part) and purple (left part) background and a white border, whose width is 1/6 the flag's hoist. On the border, in the upper right and lower left corners is represented a yellow castle on a red background; in the upper left and lower right corners is represented a red lion on a white background. In the middle of the flag is placed the municipal coat of arms.
The Royal Academy of History turned down the flag's proposal because, i) it includes a coat of arms previously rejected by the Academy, and, ii) the border of the flag, inspired by the miniatures of the Codex Escurialensis of Cantigas and including the royal arms of Castile and León, does not match the standards commonly admitted for municipal flags. (boletin de la Real Academia de la Historia, 2001, 198, 3: 564).
The coat of arms of Villanueva de Gumiel is prescribed by a Decree adopted on 29 December 1997 by the Burgos Provincial Government, signed on 15 January 1998 by the President of the Government, and published on 26 January 1998 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 16 (text).
The coat of arms is described as follows:
Coat of arms: [Per pale] 1. Gules a castle or as the symbol of once belonging to the Kingdom of Castile and nowadays to the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León, 2. Vert a pine argent as the symbol of the pinewoods, the first source of income in the municipality, grafted in base sky clear blue a thistle argent as the symbol of the old name of the village (Cardosa), which was lost because of opposition from the neighboring village of Gumiel de Izán, to which it belonged as a hamlet until the first third of the 19th century, symbol of primitive origin. The shield surmounted with a Royal Crown, as the symbol of the Spanish monarchy.
The Royal Academy of History did not accept the inclusion of the arms of the kings of Castile on a modern coat of arms just because the municipality is located in Castile. The elements of the second quarter are acceptable, but it was recommended to use colors closer to the reality and to suppress from the description the adjectives describing shade and luminosity, which do not exist in heraldry (Boletín de la Real Academia de la Historia, 1999, 196, 3: 564).
