Introduction

The municipality of Herencia (9,123 inhabitants in 2009; 4,024 ha) is located in the Province of Ciudad Real, 150 km south of Madrid.

Herencia was organized in the 13th century during the resettlement of the areas reconquested by the Catholic from the Muslims. The Order of St. John was commissioned by the King to resettle the region of South Meseta; the village of Herencia, then with 150 inhabitants, was granted a Public Chart in 1239. The Chart established social classes, separating simple villagers from the knights and nobles; a bread oven was built while vineyards and gardens were shared among the villagers. The Municipal Wheat Loft ("Pósito Concejil") of Herencia was created in 1568 as an institution aimed at managing harvests and regulating the grain market. The Mercy Convent was founded in the village on 15 November 1556 by Don Juan of Austria, King Philip IV's natural son. The 18th century was a prosperous era for Herencia, whose population increased from 4,400 in 1707 to 7,574 in 1769. At the end of the century, the villagers were granted permission to build wind mills, whose number peaked at 11 in the beginning of the 19th century. In spite of Herencia reluctance, the municipality of Puerto Lápice seceded from Herencia in 1784. Population of the town reached 10,000 in the 1950s and has not stopped declining since then.
