Presentation of Camponaraya

The municipality of Camponaraya (4,230 inhabitants in 2010; 2,913 ha; municipal website) is located in the west of León Province, 110 km of León. The municipality is made of the villages of Camponaraya (capital), Hervededo, Magaz de Abajo, Narayola and La Válgoma.

Camponaraya was mentioned for the first time in 853, when King of León Ordoño I confirmed the rights of the San Julián de Samos monastery on the church of Naragia / Naraya. Ordoño I further transferred to the church of Oviedo other local possessions, such as vineyards located in Magaz.
Camponaraya developed in the 12th-13th century thanks to its location on the Way of St. James. Later on, most of the villages forming the municipality were ruled by the Santa María del Carracedo monastery, founded in 992 by King of Leon Vermudo II; after having adopted the Cistercian reform, the monastery set up granjas (estates) and owned grain fields, vineyards, pastures and woods. Due to the size of their domain, the monks had to appoint farmers, who often refused to pay the tax or even revolted against the monks' rule, for instance in 1512.

Symbols of Camponaraya

The flag and arms of Camponaraya are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 20 October 2001 by the Municipal Council, signed on 22 October 2001 by the Mayor, and published on 8 November 2001 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 217, p. 16,166 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular flag, with proportions 2:3, made of five horizontal stripes with proportions 5/17, 1/17, 5/17, 1/17 and 5/17, the outer stripes blue, the intermediate stripes white and the central stripe red with five white scallops.
Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. Azure a pilgrim's staff or over a scallop argent, 2. Argent an escutcheon azure eight fleurs-de-lis or bendy azure a bordure gules ensigned with an abbot's hat vert, grafted in the middle gules a bridge argent masoned sable a church at each end over waves azure and argent. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown closed.

The flag can be seen on a photo featuring Camponaraya's "best ambassador", the Olympic weightlifter Lidia Valentín. She expected to stand on the podium in Beijing 2008 with the Camponaraya flag on her shoulders, but ranked "only" 5th (the best Spanish result in Olympic weightlifting ever, though) (La Crónica de León, 29 August 2008).

The five scallops must stand for the five villages forming the municipality, recalling their location on the Way of St. James.
