Presentation of Calzada de los Molinos

The municipality of Calzada de los Molinos (57 inhabitants in 2010; 2,594 ha; municipal website) is located 40 km from Palencia.

Calzada de los Molinos was mentioned for the first time in a document signed by King Alfonso VIII in 1176, as Calzada. This name, lit. "a paved road", recalls that the village was crossed by two Roman ways; the way linking Lacobriga (today, Carrión) to Asturica Augusta (Astorga) was subsequently used as an alternative to the Way of St. James.
The mills (molinos) of Calzada were mentioned for the first time in 1389; they belonged to the Santa María de Benevivere abbey and to the San Zoilo monastery (Carrión de los Condes).
