Presentation of Ribas de Campos

The municipality of Ribas de Campos (175 inhabitants in 2009; 1,549 ha; municipal website) is located 20 km from Palencia.

Ribas de Campos was mentioned for the first time in 922, when Count of Castile Fernán Ansúrez (916-929) founded there the monastery of Santa Cruz de la Zarza, subsequently transferred to the Order of Saint James and to the Premonstratensiens. Very wealthy in the 17th-18th centuries, the monastery was abandoned in the 19th century following nationalisation and saved from complete ruination in June 1931, when officially registered as an Historical and Artistical Monument.
Ribas de Campos was granted in 1366 by King Peter I to Peter Manrique, sixth lord of Amusco; in the 18th century, the village belonged to the Duke of Arces.
