The municipality of Villanuño de Valdavia (99 inhabitants in 2012; 3,104 ha; municipal website) is located in the center of Palencia Province, 70 km from Palencia. The municipality is made of the villages of Villanuño de Valdavia and Arenillas de Nuño Pérez.

Villanuño de Valdavia was named for its re-settler, Nuño. "Valdavia" refers to the valley of river Avia. Arenillas de Nuño Pérez is named for sandstone river deposits; "de Nuño Pérez" was added in the 12th century, probably referring to Nuño, Count of Carrión.
In the middle of the 14th century, the lord of Villanuño was the powerful Juan Rodríguez de Cisneros.

The flag and arms of Villanuño de Valdavia are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 16 February 2004 by the Municipal Council, signed on 23 February 2004 by the Mayor, and published on 1 March 2004 in the official gazette of the Palencia Province, No. 26, p. 24 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: In proportions 2:3, tierced at hoist [1:2). On the fly, red (or, gules), a Duke's coronet or (or, yellow). Tierced at hoist or (or, yellow), a sword argent (or, white).
Coat of arms: In Spanish shape. Gules an arm armed with a sword argent ensigned by a Duke's coronet or. The shield surmounted with a Royal Spanish crown.
