Description

The Universidad Polit&ecaute;cnica de Madrid was created in 1971 to group all the former engineering and architecture faculties which had existed independently since the 18th century. At graduation ceremonies etc. I have frequently seen the flag of the university, which is has a light blue field with the university's coat-of-arms on it. The flag however appears not to be officially regulated, only the coat-of-arms (called emblem in the statutes) is.

More information about the origins and development of the University in this webpage (Spanish text only). I happened to study civil engineering at Madrid Polytechnical University 1983-1989.

From the University's statutes, available at its website:

Art. 9º El emblema de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid responde a la siguiente descripción: En el centro, en un óvalo de oro, un escudo de azur que lleva, de jefe, un sol de oro y, en punta, un libro de plata abierto. Timbres: Una corona de oro y el lema en cinta blanca con letras negras "Technica Impendi Nationi." Como bordura del óvalo, y en letras de oro sobre esmalte en blanco, "Universidad Politécnica de Madrid."
My translation:
Article 9. The emblem of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid follows this description: in the centre, on an oval Or, a shield Azure, on the chief a sun in its splendour Or, in base an open book Argent. Crests [sic] a crown Or [actually an open royal crown proper] and a white scroll with the inscription "Technica Impendi Nationi" in black lettering. The oval has a white oval with golden lettering, "Universidad Politécnica de Madrid" [actually no "de"].
The statutes were adopted by Royal Decree 2536/1985 of 27th December 1985, published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado of 22nd January 1986. There may be a later university inner order approving the flag, but I have been unable to find it. A large image of the arms is available here.
