Compañía Trasatlántica Española was founded in 1850 in Cuba by Antonio López; the company was granted in 1861 the passenger and mail service between Spain, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Santo Domingo. Elevated Marquis of Comillas by King of Spain Alfonso XII in 1878, López died in 1883. The company, which operated 33 vessels in 1893, was eventually privatized in 1994.
The house flag of Compañía Trasatlántica Española (poster), as shown in Lloyd's book of house flags and funnels of the principal steamship lines of the world and the house flags of various lines of sailing vessels [llo12], published at Lloyd's Royal Exchange. London. E.C. (1912, online version) and Brown's Flags and Funnels [wed26], is blue with a white disk in the middle.
