Introduction

The plot of this 2002 anime movie follows a band of rebels who try to summon a godess to the fantasy world of Gaea in order to overthrow the Empire, which is in the middle of a bloody world-conquest jag. Instead they wind up with a depressed high-school girl from Earth (though it turns out she's willing to temp) and a cursed suit of armor (which grants invincibility at the cost of driving one crackers).

The movie is a remake of a 1995 TV series, The Vision of Escaflowne The Black Dragon Empire, however, appears only in the movie as part of its condensation of the TV series' plot, the political geography of the fantasy world of Gaea was considerably simplified.

More can be read about the movie here.

The Empire's flag appears flying from the mast of one of its aerial warships about a half-hour into the movie. Proportions are ~ 2:5; the center section is red, with golden bars on either end and two stylized, intertwined black dragons in the center.

A narrow blue pennant also flies off the same mast of the aerial warships as the Imperial flag and below it.

A slightly different version of the Imperial flag is carried by an Imperial cavalry unit later in the movie. It has a larger 'dragons' symbol, no portholes at the hoist, and different streamers at the fly.

In one scene the flag of an Imperial army corps, or perhaps its general, appears over a field command post. It is a red vertical swallowtail bearing a black "W"-shaped glyph.

A similar banner appears in Lord Falken's throne room halfway through the movie.
