The municipality of Mordelles (6,628 inhabitants in 2006; 2,984 ha) is located 20 km south-west of Rennes.
Mordelles was already a parish in the Merovingian times. A priory was
built in Mordelles in 1158. The name of Mordelles might come from
Mauricella, a cell or an ermitage belonging to a dark-skin, Moorish
(Maure)-looking man.
In the past, the Dukes of Brittany, short before being enthroned in the St. Peter Cathedral, entered Rennes via the Mordelles Gates (Portes mordelaises).

The flag of Mordelles (photos, photo), designed by Hervé Prat in 2004, adopted by the Municipal Council in November 2006 and used since May 2007, is vertically divided white-red (1:2), the white stripe near
the hoist being charged with black ermine spots and the red stripe
being charged with a yellow crescent pointing upwards.
The arms of Mordelles are "Gules a crescent or". Hervé Prat explains that he added the ermine stripe
to better highlight the Breton character of the town.
Here are a few quantitative data on the process of adoption of the flag (Le Mordelais, 5 April 2011):
- 21 November 2006: Yves Morvan, Deputy Mayor in charge of
communication, acknowledges "technical advice for the design of a
municipal flag";
- 24 November 2006: the electronic version of the flag is forwarded to
the municipal administration;
- May 2007: flags are manufactured by Ateliers Le Mée in Saint-
Grégoire;
- 6 June 2007: flags are forwarded to the municipal administration;
- 7 June 2007: the flag is unveiled, six years after the launching of
the project.
