Aix-les-Bains (c. 25,000 inhabitants) is a thermal spa located
on the Bourget Lake (4,500 ha).
Remains of the Roman thermae have been preserved. The city was then
named Aquae Gratianae (aqua, as water, gave its name to
several spas such as Aix-en-Provence,
Ax-les-Thermes and Aix-la Chapelle [Aachen]). In the XIXth century,
the thermal baths became one of the most famous in Europe and were
visited by the poet Lamartine, who wrote there his well-known poem
Le Lac (the Lake), Queen Victoria, King George III of Greece
etc. The modern thermal baths were inaugurated in 1864, enlarged in
1934 and fully renovated in 1972.
Entente Nautique Aix-les-Bains was constituted by the merging of two earlier rowing clubs in 1953. The burgee of Entente Nautique is horizontally divided green-red with the French national flag in canton.
