The department is named after river Oise (302 km),
tributary of the Seine.
The Law of 10 July 1964 on the reorganization of the region of Paris, with effect on 1 January 1968, suppressed the departments of Seine and Seine-et-Oise. The department of Val-d'Oise was made of 185 municipalities from Seine-et-Oise.

The flag of the General Council of Val d'Oise, as communicated by Sony Bond, is white with a vertical red stripe placed along the hoist and the logo of the General Council.
The logo of the General Council of Val d'Oise, adopted in 2002, shows on a white backgrounda red "V" flanked by the writing "val / d'oise" (left, in black letters) and "le département" (top, in grey letters).
