On 11 June 1997 the organization Greenpeace occupied the island of Rockall,
300 miles off Great Britain, and proclaimed the independent State of Waveland.
The motive of the action is to prevent the oil developments in the zone. To do
this they took advantage of the peaceful dispute over the island by Great
Britain, Denmark, Iceland and Ireland, since the four states claimed the island
due to the fact that possession gives rights to a vast territorial water zone
around it where have been located under sea oil deposits.
Tony Blair, prime
minister of the United Kingdom, responded to the official recognition petition
that he "could not assume the petition of Waveland as state", but so far no
coercive measures have been taken. The State has now has four permanent
inhabitants: Meike of Germany, Al, of the United Kingdom, Erick of Holland and
Peter Morris of Australia. As the island does not offer the minimal means of
subsistence the four "citizens" inhabit in a survival capsule. They have a
telephone to speak with the fans and with the media.
The flag of Waveland is a variant of the flag of Greenpeace. To the known
rainbow is added a drawing of the rock in the center and three waves below of
the same.
