The municipality of Slivno (1,999 inhabitants in 2011) is located some 50 km north of Dubrovnik, to the south of the delta of river Neretva and to the north of the Bosnia and Herzegovina corridor towards the sea at Neum. The seat of the municipal administration is the village of Vlaka (302 inh. in 2001) just at the southern edge of the Neretva delta. There are 17 other villages and small towns in the municipality, the southernmost being Klek (159 inh.), just on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The symbols of Slivno are described in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Slivno, adopted on 21 July 2009 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 27 July 2009 in the local official gazette Neretvanski glasnik - Službeno glasilo Grada Metkovića, Grada Opuzena i općina Slivno, Zažablje, Kula Norinska, Pojezerje, No. 4.
The flag of Slivno was, most probably, first presented to the public on 15 August 2008 (Ascension Day) during a ceremonial session of the Municipality Assembly (photo).
The flag is described in Article 6 of the Statutes as in proportions 1:2, blue with the coat of arms, bordered white, in the middle. The width of the coat of arms is 1/3 of the flag's width.

The coat of arms is described in Article 5 of the Municipality Statutes as in "Romanesque shield shape", horizontally divided into yellow over blue. From the wavy blue sea is raising up to its chests with its wings spread a white falcon, looking towards dexter. The blazon is "Per fess wavy or and azure from which is issuing a falcon argent displayed".
