Presentation of Mihovljan

The municipality of Mihovljan (2,234 inhabitants in 2001, 1,230 in the village of Mihovljan) is situated some 35 km north of Zagreb, about 10 km east of Krapina.
It should not be confuzed with Mihovljan, a suburb and old town now part of the Town of Čakovec.

Flag of Mihovljan

The flag of Mihovljan (photo) is tricolor, blue over green over black with the coat of arms in the middle.

The symbols differ somewhat from those reported in use until recently. I suspect they may represent an attempt to fit the previous symbols to the State legislation requirements on the municipal symbols, so that they may be approved by the Ministry of Administration. However, I believe that they were not yet enough "modified" to qualify, so we may expect some new changes eventually.

The coat of arms (municipal website), certainly not approved by the Ministry, pictures the local church and its namesake and patron St. Michael, a rising sun behind those and two crossed hammers in base.
THe coat of arms is used either with a light blue or a red and white chequy background.

The former symbols of Mihovljan are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Mihovljan, adopted by the Municipality Assembly on 26 September 1994 and published on 12 October 1994 in Službeni glasnik Županije Krapinsko-zagorske, No. 20.

The flag is prescribed as follows:

... composed of three horizontally divided fields. The top field is blue and symbolizes the blueness of the sky, the central is green and symbolizes the vegetation of our native land, and the bottom is black, as the symbol of the ground and coal in its depths in the territory of the municipality of Mihovljan. The ratio of length to width is 2:1. In the crossing point of the diagonals is the coat oif arms of Mihovljan, set so that its bottom, the green part of the shield, enters the black stripe of the flag, the figure of St. Michael and the church remain in the central stripe and a part above the narrowed part enters with its points into the blue field of the flag.

The coat of arms is prescribed as follows:

... in a slightly narrowed shield, with a white horizontal bar divided in two fields. The background of the top field is the Croatian historical coat of arms with hatched red and clear white fields, and the bottom field is green with the mining symbol above the bottom peak of the shield. On the white bar is a semicircle coloured orange symbolizing the sun. On the described bacground in the right is a figure of St. Michael Archangel with wings, clad in a dark blue cape and light blue habergeon, with a flaming sword in its right hand. To the left of him is the drawing of the old Baroque church of Mihovljan, destroyed in the Second World War, with red roof and black dome at the tower. The coat of arms is bordered with a yellow edge of the colour of the sun semicircle. In the semicircular indentation at the top of the shield is a ribbon coloured light blue with ends in the colours of the Croatian flag and with the inscription "Mihovljan".
