The Town of Donji Miholjac (10,265 inhabitants according to the 2001 census, 6,680 in the town of Donji Mihiljac proper) is located about 35 km north-west of Osijek. The town is located more or less at the point where river Drava leaves the Croatian-Hungarian border and continues through the Croatian hinterland.
Donji Miholjac was granted the Town status in 1997.

The symbols of Donji Miholjac are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Grada Donjeg Miholjca, adopted in 1997 by the Town Council and published in the Town official gazette Službeni glasnik Grada Donjeg Miholjca, No. 5. This might be a simple updating of a previous Decision, required when Donji Miholjac was granted the Town status.
The Decision was amended by Decision Odluka o izmjenama Odluke o grbu i zastavi Grada Donjeg Miholjca, adopted by the Town Council on 30 October 2001 and published on 12 November 2001 in Službeni glasnik Grada Donjeg Miholjca, No. 10.

The symbols are described in the Town Statutes Statut Grada Donjeg Miholjca, adopted by the Town Council on 15 June 1998 and published on 19 June 1998 in Službeni glasnik Grada Donjeg Miholjca, No. 3. These Statutes replaced the temporary Town Statutes adopted in 1997 .
The current Town Statutes Statut Grada Donjeg Miholjca, adopted by the Town Council on 16 July 2009 and published on 17 July 2009 in Službeni glasnik Grada Donjeg Miholjca, No. 3, repeat word for word the description of the symbols.

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.

The flag is described in the Town Statutes as in proportions 1:2, white with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle. The flag is also hoisted vertically (photo).

The coat of arms is described in the Town Statutes as "Azure St. Michael holding a shield in his left arm and a sword in his right arm piercing the dragon", and claimed to be an historical coat of arms.

Laszowski (Grbovi Jugoslavije [lsv39]) blazons the coat of arms of Donji Miholjac as "Azure St. Michael Archangel piercing the dragon with a sword, holding in his left arm a shield inscribed 'Quis ut Deus'". He notes that the design is based on the marketplace's coat of arms of 1906, which he colorized himself. The drawing he provides is basically similar to the modern design, although of somewhat different artwork; the most notable difference is the oval shield in the Archangel's left hand, being golden with the black inscription "QUIS UT DEUS" on three lines. A shield with such an inscription is often seen in ecclesiastic art in representations of St. Michael Archangel; the Latin sentence means "Who is like God", this being the literal translation of the Hebrew name Michael.
