Flag of Opatija

The symbols of Opatija are prescribed by Decision Odluka izmjeni o grbu i zastavi Grada Opatije, adopted on 23 November 1995 by the Town Assembly and published on 1 December 1995 in the County official gazette Službene novine Županije primorsko-goranske, No. 24, slightly modifying the former symbols.
The Town Statutes Statut Grada Opatije, adopted on 27 September 2001 by the Town Assembly and published on 2 October 2001 in Službene novine Primorsko-goranske županije, No. 23, describe the symbols. So do the current Town Statutes Statut Grada Opatije, adopted on 9 July 2009 by the Town Assembly and published on 10 July 2009 in Službene novine Primorsko-goranske županije, No. 25.

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.

The flag is in proportions 1:2, "Atlas dark blue" with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle.

The coat of arms pictures a white seagull looking dexter with a red beak and claws standing on top of a white tower on a cliff in a blue field with blue and white waves in base.
In more ceremonial occasions, the coat of arms is bordered in gold and with a golden ribbon bearing the town's name in black below.

The symbols of Opatija were first prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Grada Opatije, adopted on 3 August 1995 by the Town Assembly and published on 4 August 1995 in Službene novine Županije primorsko-goranske, No. 16. The proposed design was established by a six-member Commission set up by Decision Odluka o osnivanju i imenovanju članova Komisije za prijedlog izgleda grba i zastave Grada Opatije, adopted on 28 October 1993 by the Town Assembly and published on 8 November 1993 in Službene novine Županije primorsko-goranske, No. 13.
Images of the symbols are shown in Correction Ispravak Odluke o grbu i zastavi Grada Opatije, published on 18 September 1995 in Službene novine Županije primorsko-goranske, No. 19.

These early symbols have the bird looking sinister on the coat of arms. The further change in the bird was probably suggested by the Ministry of Administration.
