The municipality of Biskupija (1,669 inhabitants in 2001, 466 in the village of Biskupija) was established in 1992, when the larger municipality of Knin was divided into smaller ones, according to the new administrative subdivision. Biskupija was then named Orlić and allocated to the Zadar-Knin County. The municipality was transferred in 1997 to the Šibenik-Knin County and renamed
Biskupija in 1998.
The municipal territory encompasses the Kosovo polje (Blackbird Field - not to be confused with the better known field of the same name around Priština in Kosovo). A big political event was held in Kosovo polje on 9 July 1989; originally conceived
as an Orthodox eucharistic celebration, the event turned into a political rally pushing Greater Serbia, which is considered as the beginning of the Serb uprising in Croatia.

The coat of arms of Biskupija was designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company from Rijeka.
The coat of arms is "Gules a wooden shepherd's crook argent issuant from the base".
The pastoral staff is a simple form of a crozier, as a symbol of
bishop's office, referring to the name of the community, meaning
"diocese", as it was the former see of the Bishops of Knin, from the
11th to the 17th century. Until the 14th century, the bishops, titles Bishops of Croatia, exerted jurisdiction over all the lands from river Drava river to the seashore.
