Murter-Kornati is located 30 km north of Šibenik, covering the northern part of the island of the same name. It has 2,100 inhabitants, most of them in the town of the same name. The municipal territory covers also the National Park of Kornati, the series of beautiful islands off the coast between Šibenik and Zadar.
THe name of the municipality was changed from Murter to Murter-Kornati by the Law on Local Subdivisions of 13 July 2006.

Decision Odluka o pokretanju postupka za utvrđivanje grba i zastava Općine Murter, adopted on 18 January 2001 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 12 June 2001 in the County official gazette Službeni vjesnik Šibensko-kninske županije, No. 6, set up a five-member commission to prepare and conduct a contest and to present the best design to the Assembly.
