Omiš is located about 25 km south of Split at the point where river Cetina enters the sea through a monumental gorge. It has 15,000 inhabitants, 6,000 of them in the town itself.
In the medieval times the town was a stronghold of pirates who preyed on the vessels of Venice but whom Venice was unable to submit for several hundred years.

The symbols of Omiš are prescribed by Statutory Decision Statutarna odluka o grbu i zastavi Grada Omiša, published
in 2002 in the Town official gazette Službeni glasnik Grada Omiša, No. 8.
The text was corrected by Correction Ispravak Službenog glasnika broj 8 od 13. prosinca 2002. godine, published on 31 July 2006 in Službeni glasnik Grada Omiša, No. 5 (text).
The Statutory Decision invalidates Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Grada Omiša, published
in 1999 in Službeni glasnik Grada Omiša, No. 7, as well as its Amendment Odluka o izmjeni Odluke o grbu i zastavi Grada Omiša, published
in 2001 in Službeni glasnik Grada Omiša, No. 2.
The flag is in proportions 1:2, blue with the coat of arms, bordered white, offset to the hoist.
The 2002 Decision, as printed in the official gazette, erroneously prescribed a yellow border.

Coat of arms of Omiš - Image by Željko Heimer, 16 October 2005
The coat of arms is "Azure a Latin cross in dexter and a spiked mace in sinister both or".
The Decision states that the base for the coloring of the coat of arms is a 1579 early baroque dukala, that is a charter issued by the Venetian Doge and Senate; the 1579 dukala confirmed the prior privileges granted to the Town of Omiš.
