The Municipality was formed in 2006 by secession from the Town of Nin. It is situated in the central point of the northern Dalmatia peninsula towards the island of Pag and may have been named due to it the name meaning "peaks, spikes" (unless that is a popular etymology). The village of that name, know from the 14th century, was devastated and abandoned in the period of the Venetian-Ottoman wars in the area to be resettled after the Ottoman threat was removed in 17th century.

Coat of arms of Vrsi - Image by Željko Heimer, 22 June 2012
The coat of arms of Vrsi (image, video) depicts St. Michael, the parish's patron saint, in a blue shield bordered with a white and azure wavy pattern and topped with green grapevine and olive branches with blue fruits.
This design was probably not approved by the central authorities.
