Presentation of Velika Gorica

Velika Gorica is located near Zagreb's Pleso International Airport, south of the Croatian capital.
The status of Velika Gorica was upgraded from a Muniicpality to a Town status by the new Law on local subdivision Zakon o podrucjima županija, gradova i opcina u Republici Hrvatskoj (text), published on 28 July 2006 in the Croatian official gazette Narodne novine, No. 86.

Flag of Velika Gorica

The symbols of Velika Gorica are described in the Town Statutes Statut Grada Velike Gorice, adopted on 14 November 2007 by the Town Assembly and published on 15 November 2007 in the Town official gazette Službene glasnik Grada Velike Gorice, No. 17.
The date of adoption provided there is 22 July 1997, which is rather the date when a previous design was adopted, and this was changed to the current design some months afterwards.

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o., from Rijeka.

The flag is red with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle.
Red was chosen as the traditional color of the Turopolje noblemen; Turopolje, a wide plain (polje that the town covers today, is named for the extinct urus or aurochs (tur, Bos primigenius).

The coat of arms of Velika Gorica is "Sable, an oxen rampant argent holding in forelegs a house of the second roofed gules, in chief, sinister a crescent of the second, dexter three mullets or one above two".
The oxen represents an urus or aurochs (tur), for which Turopolje, a wide plain (polje) that the town covers today, is named. The building in its forelegs is the Town Hall of the medieval Noble Community of Turopolje, today a museum. The crescent and stars are taken from the coat of arms of the Community.

A coat of arms showing similar charges as the current one and a flag of the same design were adopted on 22 July 1997; they remained in unofficial use for almost a year.
The coat of arms is "Per pale, 1. Gules an oxen rampant argent, 2. Azure the Assembly House argent roofed gules, in chief three mullets or one and two and a crescent increscent, in base a bar argent". The coat of arms was used, probably without approval from the Ministry of Administration, and it was probably changed on their request.
